This show is so good.

Genuinely, I think this is one of the few shows that know how to do a pilot episode right because it grabbed me really fast and the casting is great. I love how diverse the cast is -- it’s kind of very much like a comic book version of Longmire with (I think will be) a recurring cast of Native Americans and women who aren’t just meant to be one character type.

Also, Control Camryn Manheim is in this show and Jake Jackson. And, I love Dex’s (Cobie Smulders) relationship with her brother Ansel, who has Down Syndrome.

The episode didn’t go the normal rounds I thought it would go, not that there were twists galore but that the writers know the tropes well enough to subvert expectations in a good way. In a way that doesn’t immediately make things easy for Dex.

Because Dex has her own set of problems and as the episode goes on we find out that Dex was an Army Vet with PTSD and she’s not managing it well. She spends most of her money gambling. She’s good at finding people back when she was in the military but it’s a skill that’s rusted over the years and it genuinely hinders her.

And her unprofessional, almost casual way of going about the first ‘case’ she was given (because she isn’t a private detective here) gets her into trouble.

I’m not even joking when I say Smulders had more to do here than in five minutes as Maria Hill in the MCU.

Is this it, have I finally found a show I can invest in and can distract me from Doctor Who? I can feel it is.

Also, it has a damned good soundtrack.

Holy crap, Greg Rucka exec produced this? And is actually based on his stories?? No wonder the characters were so well-drawn!

BTW. The other cop and possible love interest? Michael Ealy.

And Dex is canonically bisexual!

I'm looking forward to seeing more of this show! (and I'm contemplating nominating it for Festivids)

I super, super loved this show. No black-and-white characters, great visuals, complicated storylines that still make sense. The comic is also good, but Cobie Smulders really brings it to life on the screen.

I know John Rogers had been pumping it a lot, but wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was very ppleasantly surprised.

And 3/4 of the way thru I realized why: it’s not grim dark. Which has somehow become rare in the era post blue skies USA programming when everyone decided they needed to copy the darkened of dexter and shield and such.
